The music at your wedding is not only important for setting the mood but can also be very personal to you as a couple. When sorting out the music and musicians for your wedding, you are going to want it all to sound perfect but you are also going to have to work within your budget. There are ways to help keep the costs as low possible for musicians and music without having to compromise too much.

Remember, you’ll also need to check that your venue is allowed to have music playing or performed, they will know to what extend music is allowed so make sure you ask them in advance.

Professionals
If you are going to pay for a professional musician or band, you are going to want to make sure that they are good and worth the amount of money that you are going to have to pay. Make sure you ask around to see who are known for being good in your local area, also who are known for not being good and should therefore be avoided. Try asking friends, family, hotel staff etc for recommendations.

References are always very helpful and reassuring that they are reliable, so it always are good idea to look out for these. If you can get hold of references from other couples or venues, that will be a valuable resource for you. Although most will be honest, beware of references that the musicians provides as some may be fake, written by their mum, friend etc. You can always try checking up on references though to see how true they are.

Research the amount of money that most musicians, bands, DJS etc. cost in your area and for the type of music they provide. This will help give to give you a figure to work around. If someone is a lot cheaper than all the others, you need to find out why.

Some musicians/DJs will actually give you a discount if you refer any friends of yours to them for another function, this is worth remembering and asking about.

Bear in mind, DJ’s will be cheaper than live bands most of the time.

Local Young Talent
Try putting an ad in local free ads for a musician or band wanting experience. As long as you communicate well with them about what music you want or don’t want played you should get good music quite cheaply.

Try asking local high schools/colleges for young musicians that are talented and can play to a high standard, but would only want a small fee to play at your wedding.

Friends and Family
Any friends/family play an instrument? I was lucky at my wedding that I had family members that could play piano and the trumpet for the ceremony. It worked really well because there was no rushing to a cd player to turn it on/off or adjust volume because they adapted to what was needed at the time.

Likewise have you got a friend, or a friend of a friend, who DJs? Would they do it as a gift to you or at a special low price?

Sheet Music
You may need to buy sheet music for the musicians. It is often cheaper to buy each piece online or in sheet paper form, rather than a buy a whole book with only one song in that you need. You can also ask around to see if anyone has it for you to borrow. Some libraries have music to borrow as well if you go an take a look.

Use an MP3 Player or Sound System
Are you having a reception at home? Or in a small community hall? You may find that making up some CDs and playing them on a decent sound system or hooking up an MP3 player to some speakers is sufficient. You will obviously need a friend or two in charge of play lists or changing over CDs.

You will need to check that this option works well enough in your venue, for example will you be able to hear the music well enough in all parts of the venue especially when it is full or people? Is the quality of the music good enough? You can save hundreds with this solution, but is only worth doing if it will give the right quality of music for you and not ruin your big day.
